Massage Therapy

What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage is one of the oldest known healing traditions. The Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese and Indians used massage techniques for its therapeutic properties to help treat a variety of ailments.

Massage therapy is the practice of kneading, applying pressure or manipulating muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments to break down adhesions and increase blood supply to the area bringing fresh nutrients and removing toxins that create tightness, pain and dysfunction in muscles. This helps to repair damaged tissues whilst increasing the mobility and function of the muscles and joints in turn improving  the health and wellbeing of the individual.

Massage can stimulate the blood supply and lymph,
particularly in the injured areas, thus removing blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions resulting from injury. The goal of the therapist is to balance the length, tone and tension of muscles and tendons, which restore the correct position of the bones, increase blood flow and heal injuries.

What are the different types of massage available?

There are many different types of massage. At Sports ‘n’ Spines we primarily concentrate on:

  • Remedial / Deep Tissue Massage

  • Pregnancy Massage

    – is safe during all stages of pregnancy and has many benefits, including, assisting to create the best physical environment and space for you and bub to grow via the relaxation and correct positioning of your muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Reducing the physical demands on your body allows your body to better cope with the increasing stresses and strains placed on it over the coming months. As your belly grows and body adapts many women can experience general aches and pains, fluid retention, back or pelvis pain, shortness of breath or conditions such as Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome all of which can be helped with massage when other forms of previous pain relief are now limited. Creating mental relaxation also provides calmness and positivity for both you and bub.

Massages can be performed lying on your side or tummy via the use of specialised pillows to provide comfort for you and bub whilst accommodating and protecting your growing tummy.

If your bub is overdue, massaging certain pressure points may help to stimulate labour. These points are avoided at earlier stages.

  • Cupping

    – is an ancient healing method that uses suction to pull on your skin into a vacuum cup. Suction from cupping draws blood into the treated area which causes expansion and micro ruptures of the  tiny blood vessels (capillaries) under your skin (this is what leaves the signature red marks on the skin). Your body replenishes the blood in and around the treated areas with healthier, fresh blood which stimulates healing and relaxation whilst removing and flushing away waste and toxins.

Cupping is often used to relieve conditions that cause pain or chronic (ongoing) health issues for example: back pain, neck pain, joint pain, arthritis, headaches or migraines.

  • Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphedema is often experienced post operatively, during pregnancy or with certain medical conditions such as heart failure, liver failure, cancer, fibromyalgia etc. It can lead to painful swollen joints or extremities which puts excess stress and duress on you body and or organs. Lymphatic drainage massage encourages the drainage of waste and toxins from your bodies tissues via the lymph nodes and the movement of lymph fluids around your body to be expelled in the form of waste, often urine.
